OpenAI: ChatGPT Search Now Reaches 20% of Google’s Volume

OpenAI says ChatGPT now handles search queries equivalent to approximately 20% of Google’s search volume, highlighting the growing role of AI assistants in how people find information online. Adam Fry, OpenAI’s head of consumer products for ChatGPT, shared the figure during an interview with Alex Kantrowitz, founder of Big Technology, published on November 3, 2026.

The estimate suggests that ChatGPT is becoming a significant player in online search, extending its role beyond answering questions, generating content, and assisting with coding. Users are increasingly turning to the platform for current information about people, businesses, products, financial topics, and recent events.

The comparison also offers a new indication of how quickly AI-powered search is gaining ground, although Google continues to operate at a much larger scale.

ChatGPT Search Reaches One-Fifth of Google’s Volume

According to Fry, the volume of search queries handled by ChatGPT has reached roughly one-fifth of Google’s search volume. In practical terms, that represents approximately one ChatGPT search for every five searches conducted through Google.

The figure marks a notable milestone for OpenAI, which introduced web search capabilities in ChatGPT in late 2024. Before that addition, the service was primarily known for conversational AI, writing assistance, coding, and summarizing information. Search expanded its role by allowing users to retrieve current information from the web without leaving the conversation.

ChatGPT can now search for recent developments, compare products, gather information from multiple sources, and present findings in a conversational format. Users can also ask follow-up questions without having to start a new search or repeat the context of their original request.

This approach changes the traditional search experience. Instead of navigating through a list of links to find relevant information, users can ask a question and receive a synthesized response with supporting sources.

How OpenAI Counts ChatGPT Search Queries

Fry also explained how OpenAI measures search activity inside ChatGPT. Each user query that triggers a web search counts as a separate search, including follow-up questions within the same conversation.

For example, someone researching a company might first ask about its business, then search for its latest products, and finally request current pricing or recent news. If ChatGPT performs a web search for each request, those interactions count as separate searches.

This distinction matters because ChatGPT conversations often involve multiple related questions. A single session can generate several searches as users explore a subject, request comparisons, or look for additional details.

The conversational format is one of the features OpenAI sees as an advantage. Rather than treating every search as an isolated request, ChatGPT can use the previous discussion to understand what the user needs next.

Fry illustrated this with travel planning. Someone preparing for a trip to Paris might begin by asking about the Eiffel Tower, then continue with questions about nearby attractions, transportation, restaurants, and travel arrangements. ChatGPT can connect these requests within one conversation and use web search when updated information is needed.

ChatGPT Weekly Users Reach 1.2 Billion

The search milestone comes alongside continued growth in ChatGPT’s user base. Fry said weekly active users increased from 1 billion to 1.2 billion in just two months, adding approximately 200 million users during that period.

He also shared figures highlighting the platform’s broader usage. ChatGPT’s voice mode has reached 250 million weekly users, while users generate approximately 1.5 billion images every week.

These numbers reflect how ChatGPT has expanded beyond its original text-based experience. People now use the platform for conversations, web research, voice interactions, image generation, and a growing range of everyday tasks.

The increase in users also gives OpenAI a larger audience for its search features. As more people rely on ChatGPT for daily questions, a greater share of their information needs can be handled through searches conducted directly within the platform.

Google Search Continues to Grow Despite AI Competition

Despite ChatGPT’s progress, Google remains the dominant force in online search. Its established infrastructure, global reach, and integration across websites, browsers, and mobile devices give it a substantial advantage in overall search activity.

Google reported in March 2025 that its search engine processes more than 5 trillion searches annually. That translates to an average of over 13.7 billion searches every day, illustrating the scale of its global operation.

Google has also continued to report strong search performance while expanding its own AI capabilities. During Alphabet’s third-quarter 2026 earnings announcement, CEO Sundar Pichai said Google’s search query growth rate had reached its highest level in five years.

Alphabet also reported that revenue from Google Search and related activities increased 12% year over year during the quarter. The results indicate that the growing adoption of AI-powered tools has not prevented Google from expanding its search business.

Google is also integrating generative AI into its search experience through features designed to provide direct answers, summaries, and more complex responses. This places the company in direct competition with AI assistants while allowing it to build on its existing search infrastructure.

ChatGPT Search Volume Is Not the Same as Website Traffic

OpenAI’s 20% figure measures search activity, not the share of traffic sent to websites. The distinction is important because a search query inside ChatGPT does not necessarily result in a user visiting an external website.

Traditional search engines often direct users to multiple pages, while ChatGPT can summarize information within the conversation. Although the platform provides links to sources, users may receive the information they need without opening those websites.

Data from Ahrefs for October 2026 illustrates the difference. Across a sample of 118,671 websites, Google accounted for 24.74% of recorded traffic, while ChatGPT referrals represented 0.36%.

These figures measure referral traffic rather than total search volume, so they cannot be compared directly with OpenAI’s 20% estimate. However, they show that Google’s role in directing visitors to websites remains much larger.

For publishers and website owners, the shift creates a new challenge. Visibility in traditional search results remains important, but appearing as a cited source in AI-generated answers is becoming another way to reach readers.

A New Phase in the Competition for Online Search

OpenAI’s estimate puts ChatGPT among the most significant emerging alternatives to traditional search engines. Reaching a volume equivalent to 20% of Google’s search activity is a notable achievement, particularly given the relatively recent introduction of web search within ChatGPT.

Google, meanwhile, continues to grow its search business while incorporating AI features into its products. The competition is increasingly centered on how people access information, whether through lists of websites or conversational answers that combine information from multiple sources.

For users, this means more ways to research topics, compare products, follow current events, and find answers online. For OpenAI and Google, the next stage of competition will depend on how effectively each platform can deliver relevant information and become part of people’s everyday search habits.
