Perplexity Labs: AI Tool for Creating Apps, Spreadsheets & Reports

Perplexity, known for its AI-powered search engine, has unveiled its latest ambitious addition: "Perplexity Labs."

The new tool aims to simplify the transformation of complex ideas and projects into tangible outputs, with a speed and efficiency that may differ from what we are accustomed to. Will this tool make a real difference in how we accomplish tasks?

Perplexity Labs Features

Perplexity announced that "Labs" is designed to act as an integrated work team at the user's disposal.

While Perplexity's search provides quick answers, and Deep Research mode offers deeper analyses in about 4 minutes, "Labs" takes things to another level.

The company stated that the tool can draft detailed reports, create organized spreadsheets, design interactive dashboards, and even develop simple web applications. All of this is supported by comprehensive search and analysis processes.

On its official blog, the company states: "Perplexity Labs can help you accomplish a variety of practical and personal projects. Labs is optimized for investing more time—ten minutes or more—and leveraging additional tools to accomplish tasks, such as advanced file generation and mini-app development."

Regarding the "Deep Research" feature, Perplexity noted that its name has been changed to "Research."

How Perplexity Labs Works

Perplexity Labs relies on a set of advanced technical capabilities.

It executes code to handle tasks such as data structuring, applying complex formulas, and creating charts, images, text documents, and spreadsheets.

To facilitate access to outputs, the tool organizes all files created during the workflow—from charts and images to CSV files and code—into a dedicated tab called "Assets."

From there, users can easily preview and download everything they need.

Furthermore, "Labs" is distinguished by its ability to develop and deploy simple interactive web applications directly within the "App" tab of a project.

This feature opens the door to creating basic dashboards, presentations, and websites without the need for complex external development tools.

"Perplexity Labs" is currently exclusively available to "Pro" plan subscribers on web, iOS, and Android platforms, with plans for soon availability on Perplexity apps for Mac and Windows systems.

The Race in the AI Market

The launch of "Perplexity Labs" comes at a time when technology companies are racing to offer more advanced and useful AI solutions.

This launch is not isolated from Perplexity's broader strategy to expand beyond basic search.

The company is currently previewing a new web browser called "Comet" and recently acquired the professional social network "Read.vc."

On the other hand, this move reflects Perplexity's increasing interest in enterprise-oriented solutions.

The company launched its "Enterprise" plan last summer, which includes user management, internal knowledge search, and other features.

Observers believe that this direction may be partly driven by pressure from investors looking to achieve returns on their significant investments.

In this regard, reports indicate that Perplexity is in talks to raise funding that could reach $1 billion, which could raise the company's valuation to $18 billion.
