Apple’s AI Talent Drain Continues as Top Search Exec Departs for Meta
In a move underscoring the fierce competition for top minds in Silicon Valley, Apple has lost another key AI executive. Ke Yang, a senior leader responsible for the company’s crucial AI-driven web search initiatives, is departing to join rival Meta.
Yang’s departure deals a significant blow to Apple’s AI ambitions. Just weeks ago, he took charge of the “Answers, Knowledge, and Information” (AKI) team, a group tasked with a critical revamp of the Siri voice assistant. The team’s mission is to enable Siri to pull live information from the web, a necessary step for Apple to effectively compete with generative search leaders like OpenAI and Google.
This is not an isolated incident but the latest in a string of high-profile exits from Apple’s AI division this year. Yang follows Ruoming Pang, the founder of Apple’s Foundation Models team, who also left for Meta. They are joined by roughly a dozen other members of the AI and machine learning team, many of whom have been recruited by Meta’s newly formed Superintelligence Labs.
The series of departures has reportedly sparked concern within Apple, with remaining staff anticipating more exits in the coming months. To manage the leadership vacuum, Apple has placed the AKI group under the supervision of Benoit Dupin, who oversees machine learning cloud infrastructure. Nevertheless, the trend highlights a growing challenge for the iPhone maker: retaining top-tier talent as competitors like Meta aggressively build out their advanced AI research groups.
